Unfortunately, this is absolutely all we have of this Great Grandfather.  Lucky to have this. Had to prise it away from a distant relative!

He lived in a rural market town so perhaps would not have been right up to date with fashion . Born around 1830.

The oval vignette was in fashion in the 1870s and possibly just into the early 80s, so that gives you a bit of a guide.  Unfortunately the most important dating clue (the card, front and back and corners) has been left out  ;)

He looks older than 40 to 50 I would have thought.

If we can see the card we might have a better idea of the date - all I can go on is the oval shape and when it was in fashion.  Mens' clothes and hair etc. are hard to date because they tend not to be trendy like us ladies  ;)
 
I would have said he looks no older than 50.

about 50 in 1880 would fit his profile.  I am trying to contact the owner of the photo.  Many thanks Sandra
