Harry JOHNSON
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 17:27 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace the parents and siblings of Harry JOHNSON who died in Aylesfrd, Kent on 3 Nov 1957 having been knocked off his bike by a car. He was 64 so he was probably born in 1893 and he was from Lancashire. When he married Catherine TYRER in Jul 1914 he was a collier living in Standish. His father's name is shown as James JOHNSON and he was a fireman. As yet I have not found a DOB for Harry. I think his parents may have been James JOHNSON and Lucy FIELDING from combing the censuses but it's only an educated guess. Does anyone have any more information on the family please? Many thanks.

There appears to be 2 death registrations for him - one as Harry & one as Henry

Henry Johnson aged 64 December qtr 1957 Maidstone 5b 726

Harry Johnson aged 64 December qtr 1957 Maidstone 5b 726

Harry is a nickname for Henry (as in Prince Harry)

This is tenuous to say the least

Norah Johnson married James Harkins 1898.  James was b Liverpool 1865 and Norah b Liverpool 1871.  LancsBMD does not show 2 surnames for Norah to indicate a previous marriage - but that can't be relied on as a certainty

James was not a fireman

1901 shows a son Henry Johnson aged 8 b Liverpool with Norah & James Harkins

1871 census has a Norah Johannsen aged 4mths - father Berent b Norway ? occ mariner

If you were going with your educated guess of James Johnson and Lucy Fielding, their marriage was registered Oldham district. She and all the children were born in Shaw (which doesn't come up as a district on FreeBMD but Compton does which is the area the family are living in in the censuses. So this is the best pick for a birth reg for a Harry Johnson son of James and Lucy. This doesn't account for the possibility of him being registered as Henry and of course this Harry's father was a cotton blowing room hand and an oatcake dealer in the later censuses.  Three years for his father to change his occupation. :)

Births Mar 1894
Harry Johnson
Oldham 8d/709

Not sure to whom I'm replying - new to RootsChat and find it very user unfriendly! Anyway, thanks all. I have Harry's death certificate so that's not an issue, it's his early days and birth that's the problem. Thanks for your help and if you find anything else or have any ideas as to how I can verify the James and Lucy connection please let me know!

Hello Chezzyp,
When you reply, you are replying to the thread/topic. If you want to reply to someone by name, you just mention it but usually people just pitch in together to help.
I would be wary of the Oldham family at the moment just because of distance and occupation.

1901 has a Henry, 7 yrs born Coppull - close to Standish. His parents are James, a farmer :-\ and Isabella.

Family Search free index shows a 17 yr old Harry Johnson born Coppull.

His mother is shown as Ann in baptism https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NJSK-BL6

free bmd has a possible remarriage for James in 1896
Regards
Heywood

It is a possible issue if he was born Henry rather than Harry.  As explained in my first reply above - his death appears to have been registered as both Henry & Harry

He does seem to have used the name Harry alternatively with Henry (not uncommon):
