The reason I know I have the right death certificate is because I knew the informant, his only son Jack and the address and everything fits from my own knowledge of the family. I will check the witnesses on his marriage certificate. Harry's address on the certificate was the same as his bride's,unfortunately, so of no use at all!

You need to be looking for a birth reg as Henry - not Harry.  It would appear he adopted the Harry name sometime much later in life

From my earlier reply

Quote
Harry is a nickname for Henry (as in Prince Harry)

I have searched under Henry Johnson as well. Can't substantiate anything without pinning Harry/Henry down in a census with a father James who was a fireman I can't think of how to nail this one :-[

If he was illegitimate - he may have made up a fathers name when he married so as to appear "respectable"  Common practice back then

I'm still coming back to that 1901 census entry I found for James and Norah Harkins nee Johnson with "son" Henry Johnson aged 7

James Harkins occ is shown as Dublin SSC but I don't know whether that is a ship or a regiment.  As Harkins was b Liverpool - more likely a ship.  I wonder if he was a ships fireman (my grandfather was)

Mistakes do occur on records for various reasons.
Harry/Henry may have fibbed if he was illegitimate or for other reasons. There could have just been an error.

I am still in favour of Henry/Harry Johnson born December quarter 1893 Chorley volume 8e page 518  (I think this is him- there are no others showing)
I gave his details earlier.

He was born Coppull - 3 or 4 miles from Standish.  James, his father is a farmer in 1901. (a waggoner in 1891)  Farmer/Fireman - could it have been misheard.

Perhaps the witness names will help but it is a difficult task without further evidence.
