Thank you for bringing me back to this and spelling out the possible Norfolk connection. I will have another crack at it, might be able to find that Gravesend burial online for a start and see if an address or relative is mentioned.

I have wondered if Mary Ann was illegitimate (daughter of a soldier and a launderess sounds about right) but she sticks to the "Sunderland Durham" birthplace all her life although her mother seems to think Northwold is in Nottinghamshire so her geographical knowledge didn't come from her!

I will pursue the Flemming connection for a while and see if that takes us anywhere - onward and upward.....

Mary Flemming aged 89 buried 21 Aug 1885 at St Georges, Gravesend, Kent (which was where the Appletons were hatched, matched and despatched) her address was Gravesend & Milton Union which I guess means the workhouse. I think this is a very strong possibility for the death of "Ann" and points to her being Mary Ann so thank you for that. I can't find her anywhere in the 1881 either, as Mary or as Ann. This is a tough one.

The Kent History and Library Centre hold the death registers for the Gravesend, Milton Workhouse for the period 1871-1914.

Thanks Kath. I will bear it in mind. Does anyone know what information the record is likely to contain? It would be difficult and expensive for me to get to Maidstone on public transport and I am not sure how much it will help although grateful for the information as it may be useful at some stage.
