Help with a cert please......Adopted

Hello

Today I received a birth certificate from the GRO. It gave all the usual information but no father named.. At the end of the certificate outside the usual boxes it states "Adopted" the under that the Deputy Supr Registrar has signed it.
Does this mean that this child was put up for adoption or that this mother married someone and the child was adopted?

It tells you that the child has been legally adopted, but not by whom or in what circumstances.
