Date and other ramblings
« on: Tuesday 26 March 13 14:52 GMT (UK) »
What was the time scale for the popularity of these sailor suits. I have seen the exact same card back but with printers details, dated 1876 - 1887. Also a back exactly like this. I'm presuming it's not earlier than 1876 (though could be wrong). It can''t be later than 1891 as John Bateman's business had been taken over by George Fullagar and Bateman himself had retired to Deal with his wife and daughter Selina.
I suppose I am asking, is it late 1880's  ;D

Anyone fancy tracing the kids, they are Arthur, Maude and Bertie ( I presume Albert) Hicks.

Ramble, ramble....but doubtful :P Back is about 1865, and the kid on the left is likely in a neck stand which had disappeared by around 1875. Call it 1870?

Cheers,

But the corners are round China, 'aint that a year or so later than 1870.
It's those sailor suits that are throwing me, I thought they were later.

And you haven't answered that yet  ;D

Okay....have it your way :D

The back is definitely 1860s, the round corners are early rounded, and sailor suits became really popular in the 1880s but could have started earlier. I'll give you 1875 ;D

See you are reinforcing my thoughts now, in that the front looks later than the back, this is what I required, some back up  ;D

Of course finding the kids could help, I have to go out now.........I may be gone some time. ;)

some sanity required I think.
This back was in use well into the 1870's.
Could be using old stock so I would suggest late 70's-early 80's.

Could they be in Croydon, Surrey , in 1881 census?   Young Eleanor could be mostly called by her second name, Maude, to differentiate from her mother.   Eleanor Maud was born 1872 according to Free BMD.

Hi
I did a Google on J Bateman photographer, Canterbury
and came up with this

http://www.machadoink.com/John%20Bateman.htm

Shows lot of his pics and the differing designs for the back, may help in dating exactly or contact the link they may know of the photo.
cheers
