MacLaughn family
« on: Wednesday 27 March 13 03:52 GMT (UK) »
I can trace family history back through Jamaica to Scotland about 1700. Robert MacLaughn supposedly owned and operated a fleet of trading ships. Trying to find any information regarding Scottish home port, company name, etc. After arrival in US, family name was changed to Lowing.

When did the family leave Scotland?

Who did Robert marry?

Sancti- MacLaughn family
Not aware that Robert (b~1680) or his son James (b~1705) ever left Scotland. James supposedly married Irish Catholic girl which upset his Scotch Prebyterian father. James' son, John, left Scotland and set up home port in Kingston, Jamaica about 1750. No record I have found yet re Robert's wife.

aghadowey - MacLaughn family
This is the right family. I descended from Stanton Lowing and can track well from present back to John MacLaughn. Would like to find info regarding the family shipping business in Scotland - also anything relating to Robert MacLaughn.

Also dealing with Scotland, another arm of my family goes back to John Bethel (b~1755) Athole Castle, Highlands. Wife possibly Nancy Stephenson. Any info?

Sancti - MacLaughn family

That has been my roadblock also. A lot of my early MacLaughn history comes from the"Lowing.com" website. I've tried variations on the name but haven't found the breakthrough. Not sure how many family merchant trading companies there were in Scotland in the late 1700's. If there is a listing it may lead to a clue. Thanks for the help.

It is understandable that no religious records are available but I would have expected a record of a will.

Could the family be Irish?

Anything is possible when dealing with records this old but I believe they were Scottish. Tales of family rift starting when son married Irish Catholic girl against his father's wishes. I wonder if real name could be MacLaughlin or similar and just related in error.
