davis Family in Winterbourne Whitechurch
« on: Thursday 28 March 13 13:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

    Is anyone else trying to unravel the Davis Family in Winterborne Whitechurch. I have been using the excellent OPC resources and every time I think I have the family worked out, I find another John or Elizabeth, and I still haven't tied the family to my definite ggg Grandfather John Davis born 1810 in Turners Puddle Dorset. I think that he ties in to the family starting with John Davis 1687-1753 from Winterborne Whitechurch. If anyone else is looking at this family, Maybe we could compare notes.

Killick - London and jersey and kent
Lake - Norfolk (kings lynn and district)
Burton - Northants
Asher - Northants and bedford shire
Davis - Dorset and London

Have you looked at FreeREG?

Do you have a Baptism and Burial for Melmar?
I presume he Married Elizabeth ROBERTS 1804?

Baptisms to MELMER/ELIZABETH Davis, Holy Trinity, Turners Puddle/Affpuddle, Dorset;
ELIZABETH CLAVELL, 14 April 1805
JANE, 25 Jan 1807,  (Father as Melinor)
RICHARD ROBERTS, 22 Jan 1808, Buried 13 Sept 1809
JOHN, 19 Aug 1810
GEORGE MATTHEW MELMER JAMES, 28 Dec 1818 (Fathers Occp Carpenter)
(Source FreeREG)

Also at Turners Puddle;
GEORGE Baptised 13 Jan 1811 to JAMES/MARY
Marriage of John DAVIS/Alice MOORE, 29 Dec 1651
(FreeREG)

To me this looks like Melmers Christening, given what he named his Children;
Melmer DAVIS,
16 July 1780, St Lawrence, Aff-Puddle, Dorset, Parents JOHN/JANE
Siblings;
ELIZABETH 07 March 1773
MARY 13 Sept 1774 (Mother as Joan)
JOHN 10 March 1777
JAMES 25 July 1778
WILLIAM 21 May 1785
ANN 12 April 1788 (Mother Jenny)
CHRISTIAN  (Female)16 Jan 1791 (Mother Jenny)

Possible Marriage for John to Jane STANFIELD 1772 Tolpuddle, Dorset (F/S.Org)

Hi Dave

I have been researching the Davis family for many years. I have a vast amount of information about different members of the family. They lived for many centuries in Winterborne Whitechuch, Dorset. The name John occurs in most generations from the end of the 17th century, as does the name Elizabeth.

My earliest authenticated John was born in 1687 he married Mary Miller; their son John 1714 - 1794 married Elizabeth Cheeseman. Their son John 1747 - 1824 married Hanna Aplin. Their son John 1782 - 1861 married Elizabeth Baker. Their son John 1814 - 1894 married Amelia Orchard. My direct line deviates from John as my great grandfather was named Benjamin 1842  - 1918 he married Elizabeth Collins. We now return to my grandfather John 1881 - 1960. My uncle was named John in the next generation. This then leaves me bring up the rear.

I hope this helps

Best regards

John

Dear Trish

Melmer Davis had a history of scapes with the law. This last offence was when he stole some hay. By this time the courts were fed up with his continued misdemeanours so they decided to send him to Australia as a convict.
He was held on a hulk in Gosport harbour before his deportation. He arrived in Tasmania on the Lord William Bentinck on 26 Aug 1838. He died on 30 Jul 1841 in Launceston Tasmania at the age of 61.

Ironically Melmer’s wife Elizabeth died just two months after he was deported on the 18th March 1838.

Welcome to Rootschat JCfrance.

Thanks for that info, very interesting.

I am not descended from the Davis family at all but was just trying to help Dave (davethepost) who started this query.

Its great your info may help someone else researching that part of the Davis family.

Trish :)

PS Dave never replied to what I posted in 213 and was last on Rootschat 2022.
Hopefully you will get a reply!
