Deciphering name or whatever of father
« on: Thursday 28 March 13 22:26 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Have a marriage certificate of Stephen Mean to Sarah Ann Hollingsworth 13 Jan 1866 at the Parish Church of Sandon however I haven't been able to work out what is written as 'father's name and surname' of the bride.

Any help much appreciated. Thanks

There isn't one

It says "Base born" meaning she was illegitimate

And his name appears to be:  George Mean

Which would mean it's the father of the groom not the bride

Dawn M

George Mean is the name of the groom's father.

There is no name for the bride's father - as Carole has said, it just says 'base born' where her father's name should be written, i.e. she is illegitimate and her father's name isn't known.

Oh OK.  I thought both bits belonged to the same person.
My mistake.

Many thanks Carole and Dawn for the explanation - first time I have come across this.

So, I am now struggling to find a birth registration for Sarah Ann.  Indications from census records, after she married, (as not found her as yet on C1851 & 61) born about 1845 Sandon, Hertfordshire.
She died Q2/1909 1b/2 aged 63 years which ties in.

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874 so many births went unregistered - particularly those of illegitimate children

Sandon came under the Hitchin reg district for that period and there is a marriage in the Dec qtr 1851 between an Esther Hollingsworth and George Herds but I can't find them on the 1861

Many thanks Osprey for the wonderful information and with this I have been able to track more information and it is confirmed that you were exactly spot on as C1871 census shows George Mean, grandson, was the child of Sarah Ann Hollingsworth/Williamson who married Stephen Mean in 1866.

Thanks again. Bonnie
