Where was Honor born?
« on: Sunday 31 March 13 18:38 BST (UK) »
In a previous thread, Jan said:

I am struggling to locate Amelia Ann Herring in the 1861 Census.  She is not with her parents. In 1851 they are transcribed a HEERING and in 1861 transcribed as HESSING. Her parents were James b. abt 1816 Marsh Gibbon Bucks and Honor b. 1807 in Wiltshire (can't read the place).

I can't work out where Honor was born either. It has been transcribed as 'Hawn, Wiltshire' - but i can't find any such place.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

According to FamilySearch, James HERRING married Honor COLES, 4 Sep 1838, St Martin in the Fields (image of register not online).

Family Search also has a baptism for Honor COLE, daughter of Thomas COLE and Mary, on 19 June 1808, at Christian Malford, Wiltshire.

According to Genuki, Avon is about one mile from Christian Malford.

So perhaps 'Havn' in 1851 is an aspirated form of Avon? Just a suggestion  ;)

You just beat me to that one, Bookbox. I'd go with that as well. The marriage from Freebmd is

James Herring
Honor Coles
Sept quarter 1838
St Martin, London
1 145

Hi All,

I lived at Christian Malford when my husband was posted to Hullavington two
mile from Christian Malford.  Think that writing might be Hula.shortened version. Only a guess mind you. Not many houses in Christian Malford. That was backin the early 60's.
