MY wife's great-grandfather was John R O'Brien and was born in Clonlara in 1844. He moved to the US in the 1860's We have reached a "dead end" with ancestry sites and wondered if there are any relative on this site. We are visiting the area this summer and would appreciate any help.

Hi

A schedule of tenants of Sir Hugh Dillon Massy appears in a mortgage recorded as No. 221, Book 15 of 1844, at the Registry of Deeds, Dublin.

A Thomas O'Brien is listed in Clonlara.   Wonder if this was the father of your John R O'Brien.

Cheers

Hi again

Had a look at a book on the area and it lists another O'Brien - this time in Erina, Clonlara - at the same time.  This man is named as William O'Brien.

Cheers

Thanks very much for your reply. I will follow up and research these names. Is Erina a "townland"?

The town of Cloonlara, and townland of the same name that it's located in, are in the civil parish of Kiltenanlea.  The townland of Errina, is also in the same civil parish, and about 3 km (c 2 miles). east of Cloonlara, and next to the river Shannon.

Very few parish records for Co. Clare are online, but a good place to check for other details is the Clare Library website   See also the Co. Clare resources and links topic at the top of this board.
