Hi

I have seen some of this before, what I have found confusing is the marriage of William Traill and Mary c1749, some books that follow the pedigree of the Traill family have Mary's surname as Mocard. When her husband died I had wondered if she were the Mrs Mary Traill that married John Mocard, cousins maybe?

The following ties Ester Mocard in via Bently.

"... Checked IGI and Isaac Bently married Esther Mocard (maybe sister to John) in 1745 in London".

FS shows Esther Mocard buried 1745 Westminster.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KCZ6-F8G

It also shows a baptism of a female Mocard, daughter of Mathieu Mocard and Ester, 1725 Westminster, French Huguenot.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5GR-9H4

Those are the only two results given at FS for surname Mocard in England.

Is John (born c1724) possibly also a son of Mathieu and Esther?

How about

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5GR-3QP

Jean Enry Mocquard, 11 Dec 1721, Westminster, French Hugenot
son of Mathieu Mocquard and Ester Michelle

? In fact, an Anc'y/Mundia tree shows Jean Enry Mocquard as the person who married Sarah Monk in StSbyS - but names the second wife as Mary Strathon, died 1795 StSbyS.

There is a message here from someone who is descended from Mathieu Mocquard (aha, it's the owner of the above tree):
http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=297&p=topics.religious.huguenots.huguenots-walloons-eur
(But obviously, looking at the tree, the descent must be from William Traill and Mary, not from John Mocard.)

Whether any of that is correct ... ;)

Google mocquard huguenot - it's a recognized Huguenot surname. The record referred to in the thread linked above can be seen here, e.g.:

Hi

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I had seen the tree on Anc***ry, and guessed at the Huguenot connection.

I would love to find the marriage of William Traill and Mary ?? around c1748, there are a few books out there that list her surname as Mocard.

It's a pity, John Mocards will didn't make it any easier, I've had no joy finding the other beneficiaries~ a niece Mary Boland ( deceased) and her two children (no names)

Thanks again

Hi Claire

Quick one as I have to get to work, I see we are researching same family (Luce), of which I am direct descendant in male line, have you looked much at the legal stuff etc, I was in The National Archives last week looking at Chancery cases, but need to get my head around Elizabethan handwriting before going further. Only joined this site today did most of my research 30 years ago but just getting back into it

Hi Tremyghtern

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

I can’t help much with the legal stuff I’m afraid - there is a document online regarding property involving Thomas Luces mothers (Anne Knighton) parents (Thomas Knighton and Agnes Rous nee Yeo) - It took me about a week to get through about thirteen pages of handwriting.

Ann Knightons ancestors have been fascinating to research though.

I’m not sure if you are aware of this site

http://www.uh.edu/waalt/index.php/Main_Page

There is an early document involving Roger Luce of Trematon, plus the document I mentioned prior.

Best wishes
Claire :)

Hi Claire, thanks for that link, do you know where on that site I would find the reference to roger Luce, as it's a very big site and has no means of search by name?

Hi

When you click on the link it will take you to the homepage hopefully. On the top left hand side you should see the name “Waalt” - there is a small search box if you look below this - just type in Luce, nothing else - hit go - and it should be the first ‘hit’ you see.

I’ve been using the site for a few years and still can’t get the hang of it.

Hi Claire, thanks I have found them now, will read the Roger Luce case tomorrow. At TNA there are some other cases involving Roger, one where he sued John Luce and another where he sued Edmund Rythe the steward of the manor of Trematon, and another where he was himself sued by John Robertes over some property in Landrake. I presume you have seen the wills of Ann Luce (formerly Knighton), her son Thomas Luce, and his son John Luce? If not I can send you transcripts. Are you also aware of the case of Edwards v Symons (Court of Common Pleas) which concerns Thomas's will? It is set out in a book here https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=Jfw2AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA323&lpg=PA323&dq=Luce+Saltash+chancery&source=bl&ots=WyYBtgALxO&sig=44jbDkaiMuCzhlfTu0fiN81Wwj4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwini5rSpOjfAhUDUBUIHeVeA0wQ6AEwBnoECAAQAQ#v=onepage&q=Luce%20Saltash%20chancery&f=false
but there's more about it at TNA, contains some interesting background info although I'm going to have to look at it again on my next visit up the line.
