Missing Margory Moonie
« on: Monday 01 April 13 19:52 BST (UK) »
Marjory (margory) Heigh Moonie was born in Monifieth  13/12/1865.  Parents Thomas Moonie and Jessie Wyllie.

In 1891 she is included in the census in the home of Francis Gervers, a very successful diamond merchant in Brighton. (Unfortunately she was only a servant!) None of the other several servants were from Scotland.

At some time prior to her death in 1916 she had returned to Scotland. She died in Sunnyside asylum (cause of death given as organic brain disease of three months) – her occupation was “servant” and she was single.  Her home address at that time was given as 32 Church Street, Broughty Ferry.  This being  the address of her brother John and his family (who also had a daughter called Marjory).  However, she does not appear in the 1901 or 1911 census with them.

I cannot trace her anywhere between 1891 and 1916.

I see from previous posts that some records are available for Sunnyside but any further ideas would be much appreciated.

If she was in the asylum in 1901 and 1911 - she may not be shown under her full name.  Many patients of such institutions are just shown by their initials

Hi

There is an outside possible in 1901, Kensington RG13/35/6/4 (sorry gave the wrong ref initially)

8 Queensberry Place, Kensington - household of Cecil Porter, director of public companies. She is recorded as Marjorie Moonie, 30, housemaid. b. Scotland.

It's possible that she gave a younger age and no way of really knowing but there's  no other Marjorie Moonie in the Sc/Eng/Wales 1891 census other than the one you mention. (I searched for M* Moon* )

Thank you Gadget - that looks very promising.  I see she has been transcribed as Maryny Monier !!! but on looking at the actual census it is clearly Marjory Moonie.   It gives me a little more to go forward with.  Thank you so much for your detective work.

So far I don't see her on the 1911 in any of the 3 countries, using very broad search terms. I'll keep looking.

You're a star Gadget.  She is still with the Porter family in 1911 in Guildford, Surrey (and has been promoted to lady's maid).   So now I know she must have returned to Scotland between 1911 census and 1916. Thank you.
