1554 handwriting defeats me
« on: Tuesday 02 April 13 17:55 BST (UK) »
Although there is a very nice beer available here called 1554...taken from a Belgian recipe from that year. Apparently their first challenge was deciphering the handwriting. Imagine that :D

Onwards...can anyone read the middle line of this PR from Halifax please?

Cheers,

Annes filia georgij ?awd de Halifax bapt'
Agnes daughter of George ?awd of Halifax baptised

I'm sure the surname is the important bit but I wouldn't like to guess. It might help if we could see a bit more of the page to compare letters.

Thanks for your interest, Alexander. Here's a bigger crop, and the line is still more or less in the middle.

Ancestry transcribed the forename as James but it does look like filia, doesn't it :P

Hi Chinakay,
I see the third word as 'Gregory'.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Winslass.

I've been looking at this again and I think the surname may be 'crawd' or 'crowd', with the c and the r very close together as the 'or' in 'georgij' are. The old way of writing an r dropped below the line makes it particularly difficult to read. The first letter looks very similar to the c in Michell two lines below.

I can't read the father's name as Gregory any way I look at it I'm afraid.

Okay...the names have been transcribed as James son of Peggy Jubb.

I don't buy the Peggy bit...but is there any case for the rest of it? Especially the Jubb?

Jubb? There's no way that says Jubb. Am I reading the right line? :o
