May I please note that "Australian" citizenship simply did NOT exist until after WWII .... from memory I think it dates from 26 Jan 1949.   Until that time, persons who had been born in any of the six British Colonies that form Australia were British Subjects.    There was also the option for persons who were born outside of the British Empire and who migrated to any of the British Colonies to apply for Naturalisation as a British Subject (NOT as an Australian Citizen, nor as a Citizen of the specific colony, but simply as a British Subject).

So if the EGAN family were already British Subjects when they migrated to Australia, then they would NOT have needed to apply such status again once they were settled in Australia, nor would they have been required to give up that status when departing from the port of Fremantle, in the colony of Western Australia.

I have no information about the availability or otherwise of Naturalisation records in the USA in the late 19th Century.

Dear Jm
Thank so for your reply.
Why I ask about the US naturalization is in the 1940 Massachusetts census of Patrick Joseph Egan has birth place Australia b. 19 Mar 1877 Perth WA.
Residence in 1935 Northampton Hampshire County Massachusetts USA, Citizenship says - Naturalized. Occupation Salesman. Married Mary Jane "Jennie" Egan nee Fahey date and place unknown? Probably in the same county where census taken, first born 19 Jul 1901 Same county being Thomas F Egan.

Cheers

The 1940 census is not that long released and is the latest one available for the U.S.

Dear Aghadowey

Thanks for that snippet.
Looks like Patrick James the father was b. Jan 1839 Ireland and possibly became a US citizen 19 Oct 1880 as he migrated 1879 and didn't waste time becoming a US Citizen.
