If all else fails you could try rubbing the stone with a pencil over paper.

Yes I've gone off the D's Dawn, trouble is I'm now seeing Wenrew  ??? :-\ ;D

THe last letter or letters don't have the same angle as the W I don't think. They look more straight up and down to me ... possibly Ls.  :-\

Or a light dusting of talcum powder can sometimes help.

Hi all and thanks!

The inkling I had was that the gravestone belonged to my 3xGreat Grandmother, Jane MAVIN. I had noticed it looked more like a 'W' than a 'M' though.

Now I'm not at all sure who this person is then. No Weddells or any variations in the family. And no Jane Winifred's either!

The next time I go up, I'll have to flatten down the grass in front to see if there's anymore writing and then maybe rub over with paper and a pencil.

Thanks again all!

Just had a quick look at a spreadsheet with burials for this parish on.

Jane Weddell: Buried 9th August 1910.

This date is 21 years before my 2xGreat Grandmother was buried in the adjacent plot, so it looks like my family were her in turf!
