Have you looked on Scotlands People as that is the only website with that type of info.  Look a year or 2 back from when their first child was born

It is a paysite with a free index.  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

If you find a match - you will need to buy credits to download the cert

Hi John

The fact you mention b. Scotland for the 1901 census implies John and Mary Ann were not in Scotland for that census. Where were they then? Have you got them in other censuses?

This might be them in 1901, Monica

RG13/4749/69/22  - Co Durham

Relationships look odd but 'in law' meant wider kin than we  now  interpret it.

A maybe birth for the Margaret we saw there in 1901 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NBBY-DL1

Added: Maybe not, as I can see a possible 1881 entry for them, with no connection to Scotland  :-\

Maybe best to wait for John to post back with further key info?

Don't see a marriage in Scotland at the moment but I've found and old birth record that I must have accessed in the past  for a Mary Ann Moffat in 1857, Dumfriesshire - parents John Moffat, glazer, and Ann m.s. Robertson. Nearest that I can find.

I think that this is their Marriage  Registration:

Dec q, 1872, Chester le Street, vol 10A p 859

Mary Ann Moffet and John Taylor on the same page.

Incidentally, Monica, I think that the family that you found is the correct one - maybe son in law, James Billingham, just didn't know where John and Mary were born and put down Scotland, when they were probably born Co Durham!

Thanks for your input, I will try and explain where I am with the search.

I have James Billingham & Margaret Taylor and John Taylor as Margaret's Father, I have their marriage cert 13.02.1899 at Gateshead Reg. Office

I have them on a 1911 census which confirms James and Margaret and ages etc

I have Margaret birth cert. 16.09.1879 father John Taylor mother Mary Ann Moffitt born at Grainger Terrace, Cocken  which is within a mile of Leamside close to Rainton and in the borough of Pittington.

Then there is a marriage John Taylor and Mary Ann Moffet 1872 chester le street (same reg. district as Margaret's birth) and found a birth for Mary Ann Moffet 1852 Easington, Durham.

Its the 1901 census that seems to confuse, it looks like its been added to and has some crosses after those entries ? and Gadget you mention that 'in law' could mean something else, I haven't come across this before ?
and the fact they have the same names is confusing !

Thanks for having a look
John
