PIC of Shady Lane POW camp Evington - Help
« on: Wednesday 03 April 13 15:19 BST (UK) »
Dear forum,

I am wondering if anyone is able to help.

I am researching my family history and my Grandfather was held in the POW camp at Shady Lane in Evington. He passed away before I was born and I am unable to find much over the Web.

A long shot, but does anybody have an old photo or map? I understand that the huts were also used by squatters after the war when the camp became empty. I would be also interested in any photos info anybody may have of this.

I have been to the leicester records office and they have an interesting storey on the life in the camp but not much more.

Thanks

Bernie

I remember as a lad growing up in Evington walking along Shady Lane and seeing the 'Nissen' huts which housed the POWs. For a start it was quite a scary sight but after a while you got used to seeing them.

What family name are you researching?

Secondly, it may well be worth an email to the 'Evington Echo' to see if they have any details in their archives. It is also worth contacting the 'Leicester Mercury' and Mr. Leicester's page in particular.
