help with word
« on: Saturday 06 April 13 20:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm having difficulty working out a word in the address in this 1872 birth record. It reads 31 Well Street, ???, Paisley.
I thought perhaps it was neighbour, but I'm not convinced.

Thanks.

Thanks. It's attached now. It kept saying my session timed out, and you beat me to it before I could put it up.

Hi Graemelove

Pretty sure that it's not 'neighbour'. Compare the 'b' in December above. Had a look at modern and old maps but couldn't see a place name to match. Looks like Keighfar or even Heighfar.

Thanks TonyV. I'm don't know if it's actually a part of the address. The wedding record of the parents just says 31 Well Street, Paisley and the 1871 census says 31 Well Street.

This is from the same page, which seems to have the same content as my record, and it looks like it could be High Par(ish).

Hi
Wikipedia says this - so I think it says High (or Laigh par(ish))

The town of Paisley fell entirely within the Abbey Parish until 1736, when three parishes were formed within the burgh: High, Middle and Laigh (Low).

Been trying to find out which parish Well st is in, but not obvious at first shot!

Hope this helps  ;)

At first I thought it was Heigh par, but looking more closely, I think what looks like an e is actually a flourish on the H, so High par(ish).

Yep, think you're right Isabel - a fancy H for High. 8)
