It would help if we knew the regiment involved.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Someone on the GWF suggested it was one of the Irish regiments as the "Major" signed in Cork.

I managed to find a Major W Mc L McMillan of Argyll and Sutherlands, but cannot find him in any of the Irish Regiments (Connaughts, RIF, RDF, Royal Iniskillins etc).

Thanks for input all.

It does not look anything like McMillan but you may have been led astray. Given the number of troops on station there would have been several dozen Majors.1920 was when there was a huge number of troops in Ireland and Cork was effectively their HQ. This seems to a regular soldier getting an honourable discharge but he is not necessarily Irish - although [see below] he may have been a soldier who was an Irish patriot. The entire document should really tell the story and should show the regiment. Knowing the Regiment, the Army List can be consulted to find this officer's name.

For an idea of what was happening there at that time read up on the Black and Tans.

Thanks Hackstaple,

The reason I posted was because of the following on the GWForum.

Quote:  See attached on Flickr from Irish military archives. Document is clearly British army from 1920. not sure what exactly the uniform is?
Then the link:

 Soldier 'found on bus'

This was sent in by post to the Military Archives with the words 'found on bus, please return to owner'. Arrived today ( 2 April 2013) so was probably posted during the last week. Discharge certificate describes the man as trustworthy. Please tweet or favourite as we are sure someone lost a treasured piece of their family history when this was left on the bus. . Image predates National Army so possibly British Army.

Any suggestions welcome on the uniform and location?

It appears the soldier was supposed to get off the bus at the National Library.

So, it seems the chap in the photo was a POW number 107809.  The document was found on a bus and the poster was trying to reunite it with the relative that lost it

Many thanke

I think it's  "Wm Maisey, Maj."

Someone else has added "Major" afterward, possibly in an attempt to clarify what the last bit of the signature is.
I live in Sydney, Australia, and I'm researching: Powell, Tatham, Dunbar, Dixon, Mackwood, Kinnear, Mitchell, Morgan, Delves, & Anderson
