« on: Tuesday 09 April 13 18:11 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please help me with this one as I am completely stumped? My ancestor.George  Wood is shown on familysearch.org's website as being baptised 31/5/1767 at Chester-le-Street.He had the following siblings:Elizabeth 1753,William 1755,Jonathan 1757,James 1759,Joseph 1762,Catherine 1764 and Susannah 1769(all siblings were baptised in South Shields on these dates). He married Margaret Copeland 13/4/1790 in Chester-Le Street.I am unable to find any kind of record for any of the family on Ancestry.George's father was a William Wood was born in South Shields(date unknown) and his wife is shown as Esther. The only Esther that fits is an Esther Craigs, who married William Wood 29/12/1790 in South Shields, but again I am unable to find a birth record for her.I have tried in vain to find matches for the family but it is almost as if they never existed. Can anyone help ?

I looked up the children's baptism with the parents George Wood and Margaret.  I can find them in the Chester le Steret baptisms on the IGI transcript and another transcript by HM Wood.  The Wood transcript is a word for word transcript.  By the way George's occupation was a Cooper.

The child baptised that would give the most information was the baptism of Robert Wood born 5 Feb 1798 and baptised 5 Mar 1798. This was listed in the IGI It does not appear on my HM Wood transcript or the Bishop transcripts.  This would tell you where the father George was a native as well as the wife Margaret Copeland.  I looked into 1801 to see if it was "found on a slip of paper in the vicars pocket" at a later time and put into the record then.   It still could be there but I only have so much time to spend on this.  I don't know where the LDS came up with this baptism or it may not be correct. The records are suopse to be extracted on this site rather than submitted. There were several baptisms on the 4th of Mar and none on the 5th.  The 4th of Mar 1798 was a Sunday.

Were their later children born to the couple somewhere else?

By the way that William Wood / Esther Craigs marriage was in 1750.  She need not be from Shields either.

Burial South Shields St. Hilda:  Esther Wood, widow of William Wood, glass maker, died 24 May 18005, buried 25 May, age 84

This baptism appears on the index on Durham Records Online (you'd need to buy credits in order to see the full entry)

Robert Wood b 1798 was the 3rd son of George Wood, cooper, native of Edrom, Berwickshire, Scotland by his wife Ann Copeland, native of this parish (IGI has her as Margaret Copeland)

This is according to the Durham Records Online.  The  BT's covering this year are around page 297 of 1083 in the Chester le Street records.

Thank you,Janis for your help.I did find a death for Robert in 1798 on the durhamrecordsonline website.I am beginning to wonder if George's parents actually were William and Esther as I also came across a death for a George Wood 20.11.1768 St Hilda's South Shields, parent named as William, which would mean that all this time I have been researching the wrong parents...it may explain why I have hit this brick wall.Hopefully,I will come up with the answer.Anyway...I am grateful for your help.
Regards,Margaret
