Thank you avm228 ... brilliant info, as always, and very much appreciated too.

Do any of the records for Rosina confirm her maiden name or whether she was from Ireland or Scotland? ... sorry, don't mean to appear to be rude but just wondered if there was any suggestion of her further details at all.

Many thanks again

Kind Regards

According to the Familysearch entry for the marriage, Rosina's maiden name was Grey and she was born in Scotland: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FCHD-S9S

The 1930 US census entry for the Milward family in Los Angeles shows Rosina A. as born in Scotland of a Scottish-born father and Northern Irish-born mother. Her immigration date 1910.

The 1925 NY state census entry for the Milward family in Tonawanda, Erie, NY shows Rosina A. as born in Scotland.

The 1920 US census entry for the Milward family in Jamestown, NY shows Rosina A. as born in Scotland (mother tongue Scotch) of parents who were both Scottish-born, but father had Scotch as mother tongue and mother had English as mother tongue. Her immigration date 1911.

That's absolutely brilliant info, a million thanks avm228.

My research late last night (early this morning) suggested Rosina was from Scotland but 'that USA site' said she was from Ireland ... Grrrrr

Many thanks for ALL your information.

You're welcome :)

Rosina is consistent about having been born in Scotland, but it would be worth looking for a Scottish birth/early censuses to be absolutely sure. Her age at marriage and in the censuses is consistent with a birth in abt 1889-1891. Oddly her gravestone, as you will have seen from the photo linked earlier in the thread, gives her year of birth as 1884 ???

Thanks again avm228 ... I'm currently researching Rosina based on birth 1884-1891, born Scotland to John/Bridget (unless Bridget is/was a 2nd wife).

Kind Regards

Just remembered: the naturalization record gives Rosina's birthdate as 29 Jan 1884.

There is a mysterious Californian death index entry for a female "Milward A. Milward" born 29 Jan 1884 dying in Los Angeles on 7 Feb 1966. In case this is a mistaken index entry really intended to refer to Rosina A. Milward, it may be worth keeping a note of the mother's maiden name: Sweeney. The 1884-1966 dates do match Rosina's gravestone.

(Another oddity is that the death index gives the person's birthplace as South Carolina - can't explain that unless the entry actually says SC and the indexer has misinterpreted it).

The Milward/Grey marriage record seems to confirm the maiden name of Rosina's mother Bridget as "Sweeney". The transcriber has had trouble with it but there's a link to the underlying document:

This may be a brother of Rosina's, also marrying in Detroit (note GRAY rather than GREY):

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N3GK-P32

Added: his WWII draft registration card of 5 Jun 1917 (still in Detroit) says he was born in Glasgow on 10 May 1889.
