« on: Wednesday 10 April 13 13:28 BST (UK) »
Morning,

Can anyone make out what the occupation beginning with A is on this?  The one I've circled?

Thanks

Annuitant.

Someone on an annuity - a bit like a private pension.

I agree with Mike, it is Annuitant who is someone on an annual allowance or someone receiving annual income from an investment.

How odd.  Would that be unusual for someone aged 21? ( The person it relates to is a great, great uncle).

Maybe he came into an inheritance.  Have you checked out probate records for family members who died - that is if anyone was wealthy enough (unlike my own)

If you post his name maybe someone could find out more for you

Rookie error... I spent so much time looking at the word trying to figure out what it said that I missed what it said in the last column, Imbecile from (word missing!).

This would explain why obviously.  I'll try to track him through the census records and see if I can find out any more.

Thanks for all the help!!

Are you saying that the Annuitant is also flagged as an imbecile?

I understand that annuitant was also sometimes used for institutionalised persons

Yes, the full line in the census reads for James as below.  Would it have been a government or church type grant?

His maternal grandfather was a coal merchant.  Would this have been "well off" enough for them to provide a fund to their grandson?

Likely to be "Imbecile from Birth" I would think.  Someone in the family may well have settled a sum on him to provide an annual income for his upkeep.
