1600s Russian/Polish signature
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 17:18 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

A new RootsChatter has asked me to post the signature below for deciphering. She is trying to read the top signature from the 1600s which she believes may be of Russion or Polish origin. The bottom signature and the letter added under the signature was included for letter comparison, as part of her deciphering efforts.

I would guess the surname may be Zaborowskij or similar, but we would welcome any other ideas.

Thanks,
Alexander

My attempt: though it's probably wrong.  :)

St Clin R Zubovowsky    - Zubovsky is a place in Russia and a surname (judging by the Google results) so maybe that part is the place it was signed? Or perhaps an early version of the Zubovsky surname?

And the bottom one, I don't know whether you wanted this transcribed or not, but I've done it anyway:

W Awsliasey Jr

I hope that helps.

Jack

I wondered if the lower one might be in Cyrillic script, as used in Russian, in which case I think I can see it as Aliksandrii (using a letter-by-letter transliteration), or something not too different from that.

Thank you for this, it is only the top name I am concerned with and used the name on the bottom to help me decipher letters on the top signature.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated. The first name is more of a problem then the last name is much easier. Thank you all again.
