Howells family of Hay and Swan Hotel
« on: Friday 12 April 13 12:05 BST (UK) »
Looking for any information or anyone willing
to look up information regarding Mary
and Emily Howells.
I have a copy of 1881 census which shows
Mary Howells as hotel keeper at Swan Hotel
Hay Brecknockshire aged 60 and Emily
aged 26.
I would love to learn more about the family's
ownership ? of the Swan or maybe they
were just employed there ?
Any help would be great especially a look up
of 1871 census to see if they were there then.

I know the swan in hay-on-wye gets a mention in the diaries of the rev. francis kilvert in the 1870's
as a popular drinking place on market days, and the scene of unruly behaviour.

at three large books which I borrow from the library sometimes it may be hard to find the references again.
had lunch there once it was ok ;D ;D ;D
I wonder if you may get more general info. if you ask a moderator to move this to the Breconshire board

Yes that's them on 1871 census thanks very
much for looking.
I'll now need to go to 1861 to see where
they were then.
Emily Howells is my Great great Grandmother
She had a child Mabel born in September 1884
no Fathers name on birth certificate and
Married Edwin Davies in November 1884
so I'm guessing he was the Father.
Edwin was a Blacksmith from Fordlace village
and was 20 whereas Emily would have been
29 !!
On marriage certificate Emily's father is named
as George Howells not John which is interesting.
Thanks to both who replied - this has really
helped me .
