Hello, have just registered with RootsChat, after searching for the occupation 'Scale Box Cutter', which was shown on the 1841/51 census of some of my ancestors.  After the death of the head of the family, his widow was shown as a 'Matchbox Maker', along with his daughter, so an earlier reply on this thread saying that the wood was sawn to 1/30th of an inch thick would seem to be associated with the making of matchboxes, I think.  What else would need to be that thin ? Hope this is of help to someone.

Thanks for that welcome, Mike.  How sad am I, delving into the 19th century records, when most of  the rest of the country are busy buying stuff they don't really need?
I hope that I have clicked on the correct reply button.  So you are an Aristocrat, and I am a Pioneer, it seems.  Everyone has to start somewhere.
If I make you a 'Buddy', what does that entail?
Best wishes,
Cordelia. :)

Welcome to Rootschat.
From "A Dictionary of Occupational Terms"
Match box maker: (i) makes match boxes by putting thin strips of scored wood, or, more often, of cardboard, into a machine, which cuts strip, folds it into shape of box and joins edges. (ii) makes match boxes of thin strips of wood by hand; places strip round mould, covers with gummed paper and affixes striking part at side.

I have no idea what the buddy bit does  :) :),  just wander round the site and get the feel of it, if you have any brick walls to solve ask your question on the most suitable board and someone will help hopefully,
