Thanks for this post!!

I have a feeling I know the OP's neighbour (I will message Sue separately!), however Joseph Scheyer would be my mums step dad.  Stumbled across this by chance whilst trying to work out how to find him!

All the details match with what I was told to look for!  Glad I found this forum!

Think the ship was La Combattante.

There's a monument in Courseulles-sur-Mer, Calvados, France. Joseph is listed as Quartier-maître  (Quartermaster). Unfortunately, the images aren't very clear.

Found the memorial slab here: https://www.tracesofwar.com/sights/14910/Monument-La-Combattante.htm

If you zoom in you can just about see the name :)

I've been trying to find Joseph's acte de naissance or entry in the register of births. So far no joy. He is entered in the tables décennales with a number for his acte. See link below (top left of page 234) but of course this doesn't give details of his parents. Sorry can't get it to go straight to page 234.

I think this is his acte de naissance in German registered with the surname Weyland with a note in French to say that Louis Matthias Scheyer gave his surname to his wife's child in 1919.

Thanks for keeping digging!

Louis Scheyer appears on Joseph's wedding certificate to Daisy Coates so that ties up :)
