Berkshire Chronicle- wwi casualty William Joseph Fells obit
« on: Wednesday 17 April 13 18:50 BST (UK) »
i am researching all the men on Chesham, Bucks war memorial but have no
funding. One casualty , William Joseph Fells died at Peppard Common Sanatorium, presumably of TB,
2nd December 1920. I cannot find where he is buried - he is not
commemorated by CWGC nor can i find an obit in our local newspaper. I have
been in contact with Oxon & Berks re the Sanatorium records but there are
no personal records. Would it be possible for anyone to look for obit in
the Berkshire Chronicle? He was apparently residing in Crowthorne when he
died, married to Beatrice in 1919. He was the son of Rev Frank Fells.

Hi
There is an entry for him in Ancestry in the 'National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations)'  Right name and year.  Unfortunately i do not have an up to date subscription but i am sure someone will look at it and it may say where he was buried.

Hope this helps

Hi,

The entry shows Administration was granted to his widow, Beatrice May Fells. This shows that there was no Will, which might have included instructions regarding his burial.

Is he the London Regiment and MGC  lad ?
Cant see anything on other records that survived its a shame because if he contracted it during the war then he may be a non commemorated soldier if he died before 1921 cut off date.
It would need proof though to submit to CWGC and MOD

Yes, that's the one. I've found a few who are not commemorated by CWGC but are on our WM also some who should be on the WM who are not. I understand this is not unusual.

Yes not unusual if they died pre 1921 and can be proved that cause of death was war related then they can be added to CWGC
I see his dad was a Baptist minister so he may be buried at a baptist church around the locality.
Good luck hope you get an obituary.

Also the in memoriam page on anniversary of death sometimes has info

Both are not at all unusual - in my researches on the names on Newbury war memorial I have so far confirmed 7 who are not commemorated by the CWGC - one does not meet their criteria (a nurse in Serbia), I cannot find adequate proof that the death is service related in two more cases. The remaining 4 are all (in my opinion) elligible for CWGC commemoration. I have submitted cases to the CWGC for 3 of these, and will submit the 4th soon. If you want to know how to go about submitting names I recommend you contact the In From The Cold Project

I am also building a list in a 'virtual memorial' of names of those who seem to meet the criteria for inclusion on the memorial - 17 names so far, without trying.  One chap in Scotland has identified over 100 names that are missing from his 200-250 name local memorial!
