Any ideas of age and origin please?
« on: Thursday 18 April 13 19:13 BST (UK) »
A little wooden statuette which fits nicely into the hand and feels lovely to touch; it is made of a light-weight wood but it's the lovely lines of it which I find so pleasing.  It has an oriental feel to it, possibly some kind of warrior (it looks as though he is wearing a helmet).  Any suggestions would be welcome.

Many thanks

Ooh was a fascinating object, GS - it just invites you to hold it. It certainly looks oriental. Do you know anything at all about it's history that may help?

It is lovely isn't it, but I think it's too big to be a netsuke and there are no holes on it.  As Maggie says, it just invites you to hold it in the palm of your hand.

I don't think its a netsuke .... its probably too big, but if it is, it might be worth a bit !

His loin cloth looks similar to garb worn by Sumo wrestlers.

That's what I thought, Maggie - hence I posted a pic of the back view.  I don't know anything about it's history.  It is one of those lovely little things which hangs around in the family and you never know the origins.  I think the loin cloth and the helmet are quite distinctive and if we could identify what they signify we might be able to find out where it came from.

Don't they have different classes of sumo. Lydart?  Not that I'm an authority, of course ...
