Is the lid slightly concave then?      Interesting object.   I wonder if there is a reason for that shaped lid?    Not vesper/a box - no rough side?   (How does one spell vesper/a ?   - I've heard it often enough but not seen it spelt)

Hi,

How much do you know about W Sansum? Could it be connected with his/her occupation?  Have you found any significant event in 1865?

According to Wiki  "A distinguishing characteristic of match safes is that they have a ribbed surface, usually on the bottom, for lighting the matches."

Nanny Jan
He was an ag lab and then a blacksmiths striker. He had a brother who was a brass worker. This is hand made, of brass.

All the surfaces are smooth.

What about the matches that men used to strike on the sole of their boots?

I'd go more with the snuff box idea.

Could I suggest a snuff box made by his brother, the brass worker, that's if the dates fit.

Looking at images for vesta boxes, most opened a different way so that you took the match out by the head.
