Teacher training colleges
« on: Friday 19 April 13 06:37 BST (UK) »
One of the ancestors was born in Balfron, Stirling in 1812.

By 1846, he was a teacher. The Post-Office annual directory 1846/7 had his occupation as a English and Merchantile teacher at Glasgow

The 1851, 1861 1871 Census have him as a teacher, and the 1881 has him as retired.

I know that he was at the  Blackquarry School, Garscumbe Road in  1855
As per 1855/6 Post-Office annual Glasgow directory Page 211

The question is, where did he train to be a teacher, assuming that there were proper training establishments for teachers then.

I have to assume that he was training in 1841, as I cannot find him in that census, but where was he?

Any assistance would be very gratefully received.

Thank you both for that information.

Monica, the name was Daniel Macarthur. His father was Arthur Macarthur. One of his sons was Arthur Macarthur who became a Presbyterian Minister, and moved to Blackburn, Lancashire in 1869.

sancti, I will see what I can find out about the Stow system, but if you have any further information, or can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

I think your assumption may be the nub of the question. He may not have attended formal teacher training at all.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you all for your information.

I had not thought about on the job "training" untill now, so you are very likely to be correct. I would think if you had an aptitude for it, you would get better as you went.

Monica, thank you for finding that census information. For the life of me I could not find it before.
The others are his older siblings

From other census's and post office directiries, he did not move far from Garsu(m)be road, until he retired from teaching.

Again, many thanks for all your help
