Scottish OPRs - availability?
« on: Friday 19 April 13 17:07 BST (UK) »
I'm back on the family history, having laid it down for a couple of years; those nagging questions won't go away....!

Is there any way to browse individual OPRs for specific parishes online? (I can't afford to view multiple pages on Scotland's People and it doesn't seem to recognise the spelling of family names I'm interested in so I wanted to do a check via dates)

I'm trying to dig back to my earliest recorded ancestor, John Hounam, apparently born 1651 according to several independent genealogists, but I have yet to find this in an OPR!

Many thanks

Stoney

Stoney,  Black, in his "Surnames of Scotland" has Hounam/Hownam from Hounam in Roxburghshire, 1190 William de Hunam, son of John son of Orm built a chapel to St Mary and gave land to the Abbey of Melrose on certain conditions, his successors appear to have assumed the name of de Laundeles (landless?).
A John Hounam is in Bridgend 1642 & 1662 and a Robert McNeil Hounam was married in Edinburgh 1942.

The early marriage records on SP from 1640-1750 are mainly in Roxburgh/Selkirk/Dumfries and the spellings include

Hounam, Hounem, Hounim, Hownam and 1 in Fife for Hounnam

This is the closest I could see for a John around the date you quoted

05/11/1648 HUNOM JOHNE son of JOHN HUNOM at MELROSE /ROXBURGH

Hi Stoney,

Have you tried FreeReg, as it's name implies, and one of the places that it is good at, is Melrose, Roxburghshire,  http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

I then left it at "Baptism" and input "Hounam" and ticked the box for "Check for Soundex" , then selected "Roxburghshire" as county, Searched and got 33 results from 1642 to 1722. To expand any that interests you, just click on the royal blue "numbers" at the left hand column.

Hi

Familysearch.org have indexed the bulk of the surviving Scotish Pre 1855 OPRs

Baptisms    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1771030

Marriages  https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1771074

You can also search a particular batch by using Hugh Wallis Batch nimbers

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the links, I had never used the Batch Numbers before on the LDS. I got 55 results to my H*N*M search on Batch Number C100091. I will need to try it on my home county as well.

Thanks,

Tom
