John and Thomas Ledsam
« on: Sunday 21 April 13 04:33 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for information about John Ledsam, who came to Australia before 1848, worked as the poundkeeper in Maitland, New South Wales, lived for some time in Adelaide, South Australia, travelled to Ireland, married Martha, who died in 1848, possibly in Youghal, Ireland, then returned to Australia.
He next married Margaret Cusick or Cusack, in Maitland, having resumed his job as poundkeeper). He and Margaret had several children, including Anna Mary, later known as Hannah Mary (at marriage).
I don't know if John and Martha ever lived in Maitland or had any children. I don't yet have John's death certificate.
I do have the marriage certificate of John and Margaret.
John's father was possibly Thomas Ledsam, Fermoy, Cork. Thomas may have travelled to Australia and lived in Maitland, as a Thomas died there aged about 70.

Hi there

John LEDSAM died 1869, son on Thomas (NSW BMD), age 66 (FINDAGRAVE)
Thomas LEDSAM died 24th March 1854, age 73 (NSW BMD)(FINDAGRAVE) (TROVE)

These two are buried in the same grave at Campbells Hill Cemetery, NSW: Plot: Sect B4, plot 40575
Finda Grave:     http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gs&

TROVE articles reveal:
1845: John LEDSAM had Poundkeeper Rooms, had resigned and Thomas LEDSAM was appointed.
1849: Martha LEDSAM, wife of John, former Poundkeeper West Maitland and late of Adelaide.  She died June 1849, Youghal, age 34, Cholera.
1852: John Married2: Margaret CUSACK in Maitland, Eldest son of  Thomas LEDSAM, Fermoy, Cork
   ISSUE of John with Margaret:
   1853: Thomas, 1st July
   1855: Jeremiah, February
   1857: Anna/Hannah Mary, 4th March
   1859: Elizabeth
   1862: Florence John, a Son, 4th May (died 1884)

There was also a Jeremiah LEDSAM, probably a brother of John:
1844:  Alice Ross Chambers LEDSAM born, parents: Jeremiah & Eliza (died 1845)
1849: Jane Ann LEDSAM, eldest daughter of Jeremiah LEDSAM of West Maitland, married in October, to Frederick CURREY
1851: Elizabeth LEDSAM, 2nd daughter of  Jeremiah LEDSAM of West Maitland, married in April to Mr S WALKER.
1874: Thomas Jonathan Innes LEDSAM, youngest son of  Jeremiah LEDSAM of West Maitland, married in Dec to  Sarah BRIDGES
1888: Jeremiah LEDSAM died, Elgin Street,  West Maitland, age 84 (born abt 1804) The registration Index (1889) states father: Thomas

http://shrinkalink.com/63453
Trove articles show Jeremiah was at times an  auctioneer, or a broker/seller of property ) Very pious words accompany the death notices of a couple of his children, (Trove)

http://webjournals.ac.edu.au/journals/adeb/l_/ledsam-jeremiah-d-1888/
Says Jeremiah arrived in Australia 1837 and was a devout Weslyan, aside from an interim period when he appears to have lapsed somewhat. Worked as an Auctioneer, and as a Coach Builder

Jeremiah's daughter Alice R C who died 1845, is buried either  in Oakhampton Methodist Cemetery NSW  or in Glebe Cemetery (FINDAGRAVE) (suspect one is a burial with MI, the other just an MI)

Cheers

Hi Ambly, that's fantastic, thank you. I am so surprised. I can access Trove easily but I can't work out how to get into the NSW State gov records for Tarban. Is there some trick to getting in? I wonder if Thomas Ledsam, senior, came here to live near Jeremiah and John, if they are his sons. I am so grateful, thank you.

Hi there,

It looks to me as ij Jeremiah came out first in 1837, then Thomas in 1839, then John later in 1839.

It also looks as if Thomas took over ther poundkeeping when John resigned (possibly prior to going back to Ireland?*  to marry Martha ( *I guess the place she died at was in Ireland too, and not a named-for place in Australia?)

Also the names of the wife/daughter of Thomas may be incorrect as 'Abigail'. The daughter was Abina at death.

There was a Thomas LEDSOM in Townland Coola Coran, in Fermoy 1850. May be a connection.

Not sure if you can access the Tarban records online? Perhaps you have to contact them offline.

Cheers  ;D

Hi Ambly, so you think there are three brothers?

I was assuming Thomas was the father of John and Jeremiah, Hannah, Alice and Abina.

Thomas Ledsam died in West Maitland, 24 March 1854 " in the 73rd year of his age" according to the Maitland Mercury, Deaths, 28 March 1854.

Plenty to think about for me, indeed. Thanks again.

Hi  ;D

I DO think Thomas (died 1854)  was the father of John & Jeremiah and of Hannah and Abina Jnr (Mrs Cotterill)  and that Thomas is buried with his son, John. But Alice (if you mean Alice R C LEDSAM, was Jeremiah's daughter).

Hi all, sorry to jump in here, but I have been doing some research on West Maitland in the early 1800s and came across the name Jeremiah Ledsam listed on a map of the town dated 1835. Jeremiah is recorded as being a 'dealer and coachmaker' who rented a property on High at 17 High Street from one Thomas Cooke. The map can be found online at the national Library of Australia.
  - hope that helps in some way. Regards. ken
