Hello:  It is me, Lauraine  some kind soul sent me information from IGI on Jessie Anderson Nichols's parents. Now have some vague idea of how to look up information on the IGI - still fumbling around there, but eventually will get the hang of it.   Have the address where the family lived in Arbroath, Scotland.  If anyone lives in this area and could actually visit and see if bldg. still stand would bv most grateful.  HAPPY HUNTING AND DON'T EVER GIVE UP.  Some kind soul will eventually turn up to help out.

Lauraine, if you haven't already done so, you should download a copy of the marriage certificate at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - this will tell you the names of their parents and enable you to find the family before they emigrated.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

 :D  Forfarian:

Thank you but do have the marriage dates and entire family.  Once they are traced will be going to Scotlandspeople to try & find birth date & parents of both Alexander NICOL & Isobella (e) Shand.

I have traced the children in this family except Bryce (Brice) NICOL (f); Brown NICOL (m) - both born to lst wife Isobelle and Betsy Kennedy NICOL b. to 2nd wife  Ann KENNEDY Nicol. with Alexander NICOL (father). Think Brice emigrated to Chicago (not sure).  No idea of Brown or Betsy - should I be looking for death certs on Scotlandspeople?  Neither Brown, Jessie nor Betsy are shown at 50 Helen St. in 1881 census.  Jessie was already married & in Canada - no idea of other 2.  Have followed the rest of the children to N. America (know ship Jessie left Glascow on)

Margaret Marshall NICOL did come to Canada after 1881 and also married a HIRD. :D  Thank you for your interest.  Lauraine

Yes, definitely. It would be unusual for a 16-year-old (Betsy) to have emigrated leaving her family behind. Brown would have been 26 by 1881, and could have emigrated, but he isn't in the index to the 1880 US census or 1881 Canadian census.

You should start with the 1861 and 1871 census entries for the family. If these children are missing from the family then, it's a good indicator that they probably died young. (Of course they just might be staying with grandparents or other relatives or friends so unless you find evidence of a death you can't assume they died.)

Hi Lauraine,

Bryce Nicoll died on 5th November 1939 in the Royal Asylum Montrose. She was 81 years old and single. Her parents were Alexander Nicoll, Flax Dresser (dec'd) and Isabella nee Shands (dec'd). Her usual address was 14 Robert Street Arbroath and the informant was Catherine ?, House Steward.

Hope this helps.

Dear Isobelle:

:D Thank you so much.  The birth year would match.  Will try to get a copy of the death from Scotland's people to see cause of death - madness or age dementia.  This would just leave me with Brown NICOL son of. Alexander & Isobelle plus Betsy Kennedy NICOL from 2nd marriage to track down.

Unfortunately, found Jessie Cable Anderson NICOL on Family Search listed with parents of David NICOL & Isobelle Milne  ::) (not true).  The source posted an address so hv written her in Calgary, Cda.  She had much of the family info, but was missing a couple of Jessie's children.  I think Jessie Cable Anderson NICOL is also listed with her correct parents - but can be confusing.  As well found a Bryce NICOL married to a J. Featherweather in Montrose, but again not our Brice/Bryce.    Was an Asylum like a senior's residence nowdays or more in the line of a mental home?
:D :D  Thank you thank you.
