mary kate whitty/gorman
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 13:10 BST (UK) »
hi all, looking for a bit of help with the following, my great gran Mary Kate Whitty was married twice, firstly as per family search site to Michael Gorman ,New Ross jan march 1878 vol 4/784 and secondly to Robert Kent, New Ross oct dec 1883 vol4/323. I have a fair idea of the Kent children but not sure about the Gorman side. I think her father was a Thomas Whitty dont know mothers name. On the Kent side i have Roberts father as David born about 1815 possibly died 23 april 1870 at Clonleigh age 55 a married farmer. I think Robert was born in Ballywilliam in or around new ross in 1854 i dont know his mothers name.Robert lived in Mary st New Ross 1901 but died 1908 at family farm see 1901/1911 census Patrick Kent  numbers 11 and 5 Donard ,Clonleigh. I think Ellen Kent the niece on this census[roberts daughter]married Thomas Doyle the lodger on 1911 census and succeeded to the farm at Clonleigh. any info at all greatly appreciated, regards Dathai

I think the place to start would be with two marriage certs - to confirm father's names, occupations and residences of the bride and grooms in each case.

Kent shouldn't be that common a surname so you could try a search for possible children on the BMD Index and extracted birth records (covers up to abt 1881). Gorman might be a bit more difficult. I know there were Whittys further south in Co. Wexford - i.e. Duncannon, Ballyhack etc. Once you have father's names and occupations you could see if there's any sign of them on Griffith's and/or the Tithes.

For earlier details on Mary and her husbands you would have to start investigating parish records for the area.
Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)

i have established from the 1660/1881 births that mary whitty was from the Palace area of wexford havent got the marriage certs yet but she had two children in Palace with michael gorman ,brigid 1879 and michael 1880 and i think michael senior died also that year. dont know what became of the children, when robert kent her second husband filled out 1901 census he was still married and i think mary was in an institution but i have no proof of this,i got a few hits using the initial system on the 1901 census eg M K or K M. Havent established her death yet.

Hi dathai,

this won't help to see if they are related but there is perhaps some information here - not sure that all the dates match. There is similar information out there.

thanks for that Heywood i had seen the first two items but the third one is a little gem with all the info contained and the extra names which makes it a great little story which if i can connect Patrick Kent to my branch will be passed down in the family. thanks again, regards Dathai.
