Mary Irving
« on: Saturday 04 May 13 17:09 BST (UK) »
Info on a gravestone in Glenluce, Wgtownshire, Scotland shows Mary Irving, wife of Thomas Fern died
on 10th April 1887, aged 76 in Newark, New Jersey.
Her Husband Thomas died 30th October 1844 aged 25, not sure where.
Would anyone have any knowledge of Mary in America or when she went out there.

If Mary was born 1811 - she was quite a bit older than Thomas born 1819

Are you descended from one of their children?

If so - can you give details of the child

Some additional info from pm

Thomas & Mary had a son Edward who married Sarah Graham.

Edward had a daughter Elizabeth Graham Fern who married John Copeland on 14th Feb 1889 in Glenluce

Here is the 1851 census entry and Mary is still in Wigtown.  If Thomas died in 1844 then it was probably in Scotland as Joseph was born 1843/44 in Glenluce. If Mary's age is correct - she was born in 1821 which sits better with Thomas's birthyear of 1819.  The birthplaces of the children mean that Thomas & Mary will have married in Ireland.

Main St Old Luce Wigtownshire

William Irvine 90 b Ireland Pauper formerly Labourer
Mary Fern 30 dtr b Ireland seamstress
Edward  13 b Ireland g/son
William 9 b Ireland g/son
Elizabeth 8 b Ireland g/dtr
Joseph 7 b Glenluce g/son
Old Luce ED 11 Page 2 Line 19

I can't find a clear 1861 entry for Mary but there is a Mary Furney b Ireland 1811 living as a lodger in Main St Old Luce which could be a mis-transcription

If it is her - then she was still in Scotland in 1861

I can't find her on the 1880 US census with any family and I can't find her after 1861 in Scotland
