It may well be that they didn't marry - unfortunately, this did often happen.

They weren't required to produce proof that they were married when the child's birth was registered.
Whoever registered this birth would simply be asked what the mother's maiden surname was.
The Registrar would have no idea if what they said was 'true' or not.

My g-g-grandmother registered the birth of her first child under her married name. But she didn't actually marry the father until the day after she'd registered the birth  ;D

This is the family you have your William attached to? How do you know your William had a sister Ann which allowed you to focus on this family. Did Ann appear on any census with William and entered as his sister?

1851 HO107 Piece 2414 Folio 240 Page 12
Fell House Newton
John Robson 27 farmer of 120 acres, St John Lee
Barbarra Robson 25 Collerton
John Robson 7 St John Lee
Ann Robson 2 St John Lee
William Robson   1 St John Lee
Matthew Slater   18 farm servant Chollerton

Marriage, on same page FreeBMD
John Robson and Barbara Marshall June 1/4 1847 reg dist. Hexham vol 25 page 313

This marriage is 3 years after birth of John jnr. Either they married after the birth of John or Barbara could be his second wife which would account for the 5 year gap between the births of John and Ann.

I'll see if I can follow them through the censuses.

Having said all of above I have just posted this info as a base from which to help you work out if you have the correct family. :)

John no longer farming. William born Bingfield so that is a link to your William and as you say the name Barbara also.

Same family 1871. Barbara seems to have lost 10 years s/be 45 if 1861 correct. John aged 7 in 1851 not the same as this John so did first John die?

John Street Newburn Hall
John Robson 56 colliery horse keeper St John
Barbara Robson 55 Chilton
Thomas Robson   22 Putter in coal and clay mine Byell
John Robson 19 Putter in coal and clay mine, Bywell
Paul Robson 16, cat man in colliery Newburn

There are two corrections for Paul's name. One entered in 2007  to Lionel Robson and one in 2011 to Lionel Riddell Robson.

So William has left home.

Well I have just taken a look at one of the trees on ancestry and it has John Robson as having 3 wives with one lot of children born 1839 onwards!

The trees seem to have William born South Shields which your William never gives as his birth place.

On the 1881 census Sarah Jané father is with them - Edward Birch age 65 born Suffolk so I thought great I'll get their marriage details and if the worst come to the worst buying their marriage cert would give his father's name and sort out who is who, but I can't bring up a marriage for a Sarah Birch and William Robson on FreeBMD!  See post #18

I looked at the 1871 census for Sarah Jane born North Shields and a William Robson with a son Henry born c1871 as per the censuses on the public trees on the 1881 census and this one came up. William's occupation matches that of the William in 1881 with Sarah Jane's father Edward Birch. So can't be the same as your William as he is still at home with his parents in 1871. :)  So in my opinion the trees on ancestry have got it wrong.  I would really like others opinions on it though.
