« on: Sunday 05 May 13 17:31 BST (UK) »
Can someone please tell me where I have to go to locate the birth record of my g g grandfather John Clark, who, according to census records was born in Hoddesdon any time between 1831 and 1833.

Many thanks

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Prior to 1.7.1837 - there were no birth certificates or records - just baptismal entries in the Parish records

Do you have a copy of John's marriage cert showing his fathers name and occupation

Hi CaroleW
Thank you for your reply. I do not have a copy of the marriage cert but have the reference details so will apply for it, if it is going to help.
The 1851 census shows his father (if I have the correct father, unfortunately he is also John Clark!) as a builder (out of work). Son John married in 1857.

Regards
Julia

The only John Clarke b Hoddesdon I can find on the 1851 was b 1830 and is Clarke with an e.  He was a servant (garden labourer) so not with his family.  Coincidentally - the head of the family he was working for was shown as a builders merchant

I know John married an Eliza but there are several possibilities so what was her maiden name?

I suspect it  may be Tucker and if it was - John's father is shown as William on the marriage cert

5.7.1857 at St Giles Camberwell - both shown as full age (over 21)

John Clark bachelor occ sawyer - father William occ labourer

Eliza Tucker spinster - father Charles occ boot maker

Witnesses Joseph Tucker and somebody whose signature I can't decipher but is not Clark or Tucker

That is fantastic, I have wife as Eliza Tucker. The 1851 census I was working from is for address 16 Forest Row Hackney which shows a John Clark born Hertfordshire 1833 as an app to a carpenter (and I knew he was a steam sawyer)so being new to this  I put 2and 2 together and made 5!!!
How did you do that?
Thank you so much.

Checked the 1861 for wife's name and saw they were in Lambeth and John was a power sawyer

More than one possible match on freebmd so checked London marriages and found the one above

How do you have access to the certificates? Is there software you can purchase?
