John Gardiners occupation now that is another can of worms!
When Thomas marries in 1840 ,he is of full age,a bachelor, and a Tailor.
his father John is listed as a Gent
When Thomas marries in 1868,he is 49,a widower, and a Tailor Journeyman,
his father is listed as Deaceased and a former Labourer.
Gent to Labourer now that's a serious career change!
Did he lose all his money in some scandal?,or did his son just "exaggerate a tiny bit".
The wedding was in Leyton Essex where she came from so perhaps he was able to get away with it for a while?
The labourer part fits in nicely with the dying in Market Harboro workhouse, but he is not there in 1841 census, and I cannot see him anywhere else.
There is a John and Elizabeth Gardener living in Seagrave in 1841 and 1851,who seems to die in 1860 Barrow on soar ,and he was a Gardener by profession as well as by name.
I also have from IGI a marriage of a John Gardiner to a Elizabeth Chapman which would be wonderful but its in 1732 in Heather, which is 86 years before Thomas Chapman Gardiner is born,so unless somebody has made a total misread with the year and its 1792 instead, that rules them out.
More questions than answers,as usual
Thanks for the help
Paul
