help please Scratchley family thornton Heath
« on: Saturday 11 May 13 16:10 BST (UK) »
Hi
Please can anyone give me any info on my great uncles John known as Jack, Ernest and George Scratchley. They were builders in Thornton Heath in the 1920-30's I think! I believe that Scratchley Hall was built with a donation from one of them but I am not sure who. I also know that my grandmother and great aunt used to run the Scratchley tea rooms which were in the High Street. Any info would be greatly appreciated - this is my first post on rootschat so I hope it is ok !!!

Wow Thank you so much for all the info - My grandmother was Rebecca Scratchley and Job my great great grandfather!! I have  a teapot that was awarded to Job in 1859 for the "best kept cottage and garden in the village of Keevil". I think that Jane was probably known as Aunt Gig in the family. I remember Great aunts Fanny and Florrie as a small child - they lived next door to each other and I was fascinated by their outside toilet !!! :)

You could check them out on the 1911 census - Rootschat will not allow us to post 1911 details I'm afraid

Use these instructions and you will get the info without having to spend any money

USING THE FREE 1911 INDEX TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT HOUSEHOLD

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Once you find a possible match - make a note of the county and district in which the person was living

Return to the index and in PERSONAL DETAILS - just put the surname of the family - nothing else

In LOCATION - Select the county and below it - type in the district

In OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD - show the full name of the person you have found on the index

Click SEARCH

The 1911 census is strictly pay per view so you will have to buy credits to view the full entry - the above instructions will only help to possibly show others of the same surname in the same household

Thank you Carole
I had no idea I could access the 1911 census in that way. :) I have done a bit of research on another site but found it quite difficult to navigate. I am so excited that you have managed to fill in some of the gaps for me on my first visit to rootschat!!  I shall have to visit the Wiltshire  area and see if anyone has more details on the Scratchleys from there.

Thank you
I have the census details for Job going back to 1851 already but the 1841 would be fantastic. I had no idea one of his sons went to Canada . How are you doing all this so quickly? I am in awe...... it took me months to get this far when I tried before!!!
