I can not find anything on the Slamons in Ireland yet, although I know from researching my Stewart family from Ireland that it is not always easy especially whEN you have no idea of which county they were from.

It could be a 'slu' sound pronounced just behind the teeth (like the Welsh LL is), so, depending on who heard it, it could be deciphered as an L or an SL

I wonder if the McSlane was really Mclane (McLean) or McCane (McCain)  :-\

Have to agree with you Gadget.
Because of my own South of Scotland/Irish McLean/ McClung I did wonder if Mcslane could be a misinterpretation of McLean/ McLane/McLaine??

Have you followed all of the children on the 1911? Sometimes there's an actual place of birth given on that census, rather than just 'Ireland'  (I see that Bridget is just Ireland, though  :( )

Don't know if this link would be of any use Sharon  http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/surnames.php?surname=MCSLANE

Also look at Wikepedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_name

Looks like Slane Slaney McSlane and O'Slane etc were used in Ireland.

Another spanner in the mix- could it be McShane? (Watched old repeat of Lovejoy last night  ;D)

Hello Again

A bit more. I think I mentioned  Cos Galway and Offaly before. I've just checked the 1911 Irish census and of the 43 Slamon on that  census, all but 3 are from Co Galway or Co Offaly (Kings Co). In 1901, there were 49 and 26 were from those two Counties.

Just noticed folks - there is also a Michael Lamont age given as 65 living at Kilblain Street, Muirs Land on the 1851 Census.
His wife Ann is 42 and born in Greenock.
Living with them is a son Michael aged 20  born Greenock
and another James age   1   born in Greenock.

Could this Michael be related? Could he be Peter's father with perhaps wife no.2?
I know his age would make him a young dad but bearing in mind the unreliability of Census ages it's not impossible!!
