Alice Allwork
« on: Monday 13 May 13 10:51 BST (UK) »
In 1958 I won a prize at my local church, it was a bible and given out as the
Alice Allwork Memorial  Prize

Unfortunately  I have no idea who this woman was, she must have been connected to St Jude's church Lancefield St, sadly closed and pulled down in 1958/1959, I must have been one of the last to receive this bible

This prize was given out once a year to a sunday school pupil, boy and girl,   I was 16 at the time

Does anyone know anything about Alice Allwork and why this was given out to  Sunday school pupils

Any info greatly received

These   things are often  named after a ' long standing wealthy   parishioner'  who  maybe   started  up  the  Sunday  School,  or  maybe  she was the  vicars wife  !

Thanks Jan57, I suppose I ought to try to find out from the church records, I assume they will be at St Ann's library Westminster, a London day trip I expect, not possible at the moment

There were 2 of these given out every year, for how long I don't know, I was hoping perhaps someone else who had received one might be a rootschatter

regards

Still wondering if anyone else from St Jude's church won this memorial prize, discovered recently my tin brother was awarded one but not the same year, can't find out much about her, married or single I don't know

If 2 were given out every year to a girl and a boy there must be someone who might still have one

I've also found a Frederick and Alice Allwork in the 1960's living at 9 Saville House, Hanson St, Marylebone, which must be close to Lancefield Street.

They appear to be the Frederick Allwork and Alice Ford couple who married in 1920 at St Mark's, Bryanston Square.  Frederick was an indoor porter, and Alice a domestic servant, but that of course doesn't mean that they weren't regular attendees at St Jude's later in life, and Alice used some of her money to invest in prizes at the church.

Rosie, I think this may be the Alice Allwork you found in the death ref - she was 47 at her marriage in 1920, so that isn't far away from an 1870's birth, given the potential inaccuracies of death certs.

Added:  husband Frederick was 42 at marriage, so born 1878, and aligning Alice's age at death with his seems likely

I did think the Paddington death might be her but I would like to know something about her, not to worry

LMA has records
https://search.lma.gov.uk/LMA_DOC/P87_JUD.PDF

Including registers of baptisms and marriages
Not much else, but has PCC minutes, 1946-59

Did St Jude have a parish magazine?
