Ann GRIFFITHS and George Hopla.
« on: Wednesday 22 May 13 12:33 BST (UK) »
Information sought concerning the above family [ Ann Hopla ( nee GRIFFITHS ) and George Hopla ]

I know that Ann GRIFFITHS and George Hopla were married at Merthyr Tydfil in 1847.

But they appear to have emigrated to America in the late 1860's,
and some of the family died in Keyport, Monmouth County, New Jersey.
And it is information on this I seeking, if anyone can help me :-)

Thank you KGarrad,

For the very useful information you so kindly found for me.

It can be assumed from the two census entries that George and Ann spent much of their married life in the Merthyr / Cardiff area's. With the odd visit back to Pwllcrochan.

Over the years I have done much research on behalf of others into the Hopla Family from and around the Castlemartin Hundred. In your case there is no reference to the baptism of a George Hopla at Pwllcrochan in circa 1827 ~ 1830.

The only baptism in the area is one George Hopla who was baptismed in the parish in 1857, so he may have returned to be baptized as an adult.

Given that he was born in Pwllcrochan circa 1827 then from my transcription of the Monkton parish registers 1711 to 1950’s he may have been the son of :
Thomas Hopla a servant of Pwllcrochan who mrd Elizabeth Williams a spinster of the parish of Monkton by banns on the 23 Oct 1813 in front of  Thomas Dalton. Both made their mark in the presence of George Purser and Margaret Hall.
(Note George Purser was of Moreston Farm at this time, but the family would later be of Llanteg the next parish to Eglyscummin, the county/ parish boundry passing along the leat of the mill of our families ancestors of Llanteg.

An alternative is lightly that your George may be the son of
John Hopla a labourer who mrd Elizabeth Bateman at Pwllcrochan on the 02 Nov 1816.

All the other Hoplas are well established in the town of Pembroke mainly in the Eastend and are reflected in my transcripts of St Mary and St Michael and in my research into the headstones and memorials of Pembroke St Michael, hopefully to be produced for the church later this year.

The lightlyhood is that at one time the family owned the “Hoplass Farm” at Rhoscrowther, easily found on Google Maps.

I was going to mention that much can be found at ;

But seeing you have posted there, I would expect “Tony” to reply at some point to your thread.

Hello,
I'm not sure whether you mean that you want information from both Wales and USA. :-\
Do you have them in NJ?

Sorry for the mis-understanding, I have no information on the family from across the pond only here in Pembrokeshire, but more in and around the town of Pembroke back to the late 17th.

Hello Heywood,

Thank you for your help :)

What I am really looking for is any references to George and Ann Hopla after they emigrated to New Jersey in 1870. It seems that the information you have so kindly given does not include all George and Ann's Children, which I find strange  ???

So any further information on the family in New Jersey would be most welcome.

Thank you again for your help already  ;)

Hello again,

Yes I noticed that.
The older girls may have married by 1871.
In 1930 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X4X1-BCS
Diana and Anna state that they emigrated abt 1880. They are with the family in 1880, but presumably they didn't emigrate at the same time as their parents.
