Charles Palmer b 1845-1849
« on: Wednesday 22 May 13 19:47 BST (UK) »
My great-grandfather was Charles Palmer (possibly Charles Henry Lee Palmer, as was his son) born between 1845-1849, i believe in the Stepney/Poplar area of London, His marriage certifcate (to Emma Philpot in 1881) shows his father as also being Charles.... at certain points in their both lives their occupation is recorded as mariner.

4 of Charles 6 children also have a middle name Lee, one of which was my grandmother Harriet Lee Palmer

believe my ggrandfather Charles (Henry Lee ?) died in 1906

does anyone know anything about this family ??

I have hit a brick wall trying to confirm the birth of my great-grandfather (1845-1849) and don't even know where to look to find his parents, Charles & ?

There is a marriage of Charles Edward Palmer to Mary Ann Lee,1839 in Holloway.Amongst quite a few children is Henry born 1842.Perhaps he added his parents other names to become Charles Henry Lee Palmer
Added:There is also a Charles Edward Palmer born 1840.
Regards
Roger

thanks Roger, the maiden name of Lee is certainly a possibility, i've looked back at the census records and some of the details tally, but some dates and occupations do not.... that doesnt of course mean this is the wrong family.

I have added the data to my family tree in the hope it prompts some hints.... at the moment I dont know how I can verify any of the info though..

thanks very much for responding

Good Morning
As he's on the 1861 census as a 13 year old midshipman lodging 19 Park St,that does raise some questions.
Have you tried looking for his enlistment in the Royal Navy or merchant navy mates certificate etc?
There is a second mates certificate 26.1.1866 for a Charles William Sam Palmer age 18 from London-number 81571.To be honest I don't think this is him but if it is supposedly you can use other records to track down the boats he served on and his personal details using the certificate number at the Royal Maritime Museum/records  Greenwich.
That young he may have been an orphan enrolled by Stepney Poor Law Union ,you could try and check that out.I don't want to step on any toes ,and this may not be the case, but have you considered trying Lee as a surname, could perhaps his parents have been unmarried, hence the 2 surnames?

I noted the 1861 cencus record of midshipman early on in my research, and although i never ruled it out it struck me as being a bit grand for what i was expecting to find. I wouldnt have thought he would have been staying in a hotel whose guests included a baronet, chaplain and Court commissioner.

He is also very young to be staying (and able to afford to stay) in a hotel on his own... I wonder if he is there with other residents, perhaps the Fane's who are listed above him.... is it possible they took him in ?  how do we ever find out ?
