myluck!

What I found with your lead was his Civil Death of 19 Feb. 1900. It lists him as a shoemaker in the Ballinasloe workhouse. I have an 1875 Milo, NY Census that lists John Flynn as age 30 and as a laborer. I have found that most of my Irish relatives were not very accurate when stating their ages.

I know that he was married in Jan 1868 in Danesfort, Loughrea, Galway, near Bullaun. His wife was born in Bullaun. I'm not sure of his birth date, but I think that he was also born there. The Apr. 1838 Church Baptism lists his father as Bernard, but it could easily be a mistake. I have found Bryan Flynn in Griffith's Valuation as living in Bellayarha South, Bullaun, Galway.

I think that since he left his family in America that he will not very easy to find in Ireland.

Thanks for the help.

I have found in my searches that the name Bryan/Bernard were interchangable at one point.
That is not to say all Bryan's are Bernards or visa versa but it is possible.

There is a marriage of a Bernard FLYNN in Bullaun/Grange to a Mary ? (I cannot work out the surname) in 1834 on rootsireland.ie;
there are also two FLYNN births to these parents - John 1838 and Cecelia 1835 which is interesting as your John named a daughter Cecelia.

It is possible that for a census someone could be described as a labourer when in fact they have a trade.

This link shows a search for all FLYNNs in Bullaun which indicates there were at least six contemporaries of your John,
another John x2, Darby, Thomas x2 and Patt all having family baptised in the parish in the 1860's and 1870s.
There are no obvious matches in the 1901 census when they would all have been late in their 60s.

By the way ages were relative to memory or requirement!

myluck!

Thanks for the information on the marriage and possible sister.

I agree about interchangeable names since I have found this on my other Irish relatives, especially on Church records.

The link shows 1 hit for John and Anne Cahill that I know is accurate for the birth of their daughter, Mary.

I found the 31 Jan. 1834 Church Marriage of Bernard Flynn and Mary Kelly on RootsIreland.ie. The father's first names were not recorded and neither mother's name was listed. The witnesses were Timothy Moran and Mary Moran.

Cecilia was born 09 Sep. 1835 with Bernard and Mary as parents. The only Sponsor is Mary Dolphin.

I also found a 15 December 1834 Church Baptism in Ballinasloe for a Daniel Flynn, parents Bernard Flynn and Mary Last name not recorded. The Sponsors were Thomas Hearney and Margaret Ward.

Ballinasloe is about 18 km. from Bullaun, Grange is about 3 km. closer. They might have lived there before they moved to Bullaun.

Since Bernard is an Anglicization of Bryan, who is listed as John's father on his marriage record, I think that there is a good chance that Cecilia is my relative and maybe Daniel.

I agree but it will be difficult with the lack of records at that time to prove Cecelia's connection
A line you could take, if you have the time and not already thought of, Timothy and Mary MORAN may be a married couple and that Mary is Bernard/Bryan's sister - looking for a marriage could find a record with more details. Long shot but could be fruitful
Best of luck

I'll try searching on RootsIreland and Family Search for a Timothy Moran/ Mary Flynn Moran marriage and was unsuccessful.
