JHG Service record help please
« on: Saturday 25 May 13 20:10 BST (UK) »
Could someone please decipher the attached record extract.

What I have so far is

50Th Foot         22 years      old age and asthma
South Devon militia     14 years
?         2 years                    ?
2. ?                   2 years 7 months
Total 40 years 7 months

(If it helps the end of the period is in 1805)
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

No don't think so as they would have invalided him out rather than ley him serve a further 2 years 7 months somewhere else. (The discharge papers 1805 do not say he is an invalid)

Late Invalids - 2 years
2nd Royal Veteran Battalion - 2 years & 7 months

So-called 'Invalid Regiments' were formed from men previously invalided out of the war but fit for light duties such as keeping a garrison etc.

This link has information on the Royal Veteran Battalions.

Googling will give you more.
