Anne Bridget MAHONY
« on: Sunday 26 May 13 15:56 BST (UK) »
I am looking for Anne Bridget MAHONY  - What I know about her is from her daughter's 1933 certificate of Marriage.

Anne is named as the mother of Marie Louise SMITH,
Marie Louise SMITH was born in Ballarat about 1908 according to the wedding cert. But no birth found in the Victorian indexes (online or CD)

Anne's husband (Marie's father) is named on the cert as John SMITH (what an unusual name) however I am not looking for him unless he helps me find Anne.  John was an Inspector in the Railways.

I have not found a marriage for John & Anne in Australia, NZ or UK.

Anne was probably Roman Catholic - her daughter's wedding was Catholic.

I am told the family lived in Ballarat East.

I have looked for other children in Victoria with these parents - both in births and deaths - no luck.

Anne Bridget MAHONY is a bit of a mystery,
Thanks Steve

I don't have access to Victorian records, but did a little free searching using several of the parameters you have supplied.

This eventually narrowed down to one Ann  Marie Louise Mahoney born between 1899 and 1910. She was found under the name Louise. Sometimes less information is better, but if you have CD access you may be able to try.

If not, then this is one for MERLIN or CANDO.

I don't think it would be much use trolling through TROVE for birth announcements.

Hi Steve

If this is the daughter's death then the mother had a different surname?

Marie Louise LYNCH aged 69 died at BRI 1974
Father named John SMITH and mother Anne SIDEL

To Cherokee,  Thanks for your reply, but no "SMITH Marie born 1918 BALLT E"  is not her.  We know from the certificates we can find that Marie Louise was born some where around 1905 to 1908.  Marie's marriage cert says she was 25 in 1933.

To Essie, You are correct - this is the same Marie Louise.  We think the marriage cert is more likely to have the correct name, It is possible that Anne married twice and that "Mahoney" is from a previous marriage.  Still the problem remains.  We don't have Marie's birth and we still haven't properly identified Marie's mother "Anne".  Although SIDEL/SEIDEL may be a good clue.  We have looked for a SIDEL connection and not yet found it. Likewise for MAHONY/MAHONEY.

We have looked in the Victorian indexes for any Marie or Louise SMITH around this time but haven't found any that connect satisfactorily.

To Neil Todd,  I am not quite sure where you suggesting I look.

Well if catholic then former husband would have be deceased.

Either Siedel/Sidel or Mahoney/Mahony. But not having access to Vic records it can be an expensive hobby trolling the indexes. >:(

She could have married Tasmania but don't know if you have searched there.

My explanation about either Cando or Merlin is that both have offline access to many records IE CD's and Hardcopy resources for Vic and other states. But neither has picked up on the thread. ::)

If you dont get anywhere maybe a PM to one of them may help.

Frederick August Seidel died in 1906 - his will/probate is on the Victoria Archives site but the estate was not sorted until 1910.  Widow Annie Seidel of  Eureka Street stated that the reason for this was that she was expecting her sons (Herman Theodore, the eldest, and another) to come back from Johannesburg where they had business, so she had been waiting for them.

Annie died in 1923 and in her will she mentions kids - Lilian Maud Davis wife of Arthur Davis, Herman Theodore Seidel, Percival Chivers Seidel and Albert Arthur Lehndorf Seidel.

I guess "Annie Catherine" on later records and who died 1965 is the wife of Percival - perhaps he travelled a lot hence not on electoral rolls.  There are mentions of this family on Eureka Street in 1909 (the "Ballarat Tornado") - Mrs Seidel, her daughter, her son's yard next door to hers, Mrs Seidel "jun" + child all feature.

Perhaps the Seidels looked after Marie when she was young - hence the family thinking her mother was "Sidel"? (mixing up Annie Seidel and Anne Bridget Smith/Mahoney).

Sparrett and Jorose - thank you for your comments.
I have looked at the death certs for both Annie Catherine SEIDEL (d 1974) and Percival Chivers SEIDEL (d 1942).
They were husband & wife.  They were having children about the time Marie Louise was born, But Marie Louise is not listed amongst their children.
The SEIDELs could be adoptive parents, but they do not seem to be birth parents.

Frederick August SEIDEL (d 1906) and Annie SEIDEL (d 1925, nee CHIVERS) were the parents of Percival Chivers SEIDEL (d 1942).
regards
