Rescued - H E Flavell - Royal Warwickshires - In India
« on: Sunday 26 May 13 19:18 BST (UK) »
I found this lovely little thing at a car boot sale today - I couldn't resist rescuing it in the hope that it could be given a loving home.

The text reads:

This is to certify that No. 5105781
Rank Pte. Name Flavell, H. E.
Served in the Royal Warwickshire Regt.
From 16 - 1 - 31 To <blank>

<Some indiscernible signature>
Commanding 1st Bn. The Royal Warwickshire Regt.

Station Fyzabad, India
Date 28/12/37

As with all my rescues - the aim is to find a loving home for the document with some kind of relative/descendant if possible.

I don't have access to Ancestry so if he appears there could someone please make contact for me.

Also a sticker on the back suggesting some connection with Rugby

Interesting - but totally of-topic - there seems to be some reference to Peberdy's son as a WW1 pilot crashing in Greece.

Just an observation, Paul. The label looks 'old' in style. I wonder if an old frame has been re-used for the certificate?

On September 7, 1937, the 1st Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment held a Trooping of the Colour ceremony. This was the Warwick’s farewell gesture to Poona. The Officer in Command of the 1st Battalion was Brevet Colonel F. C. Roberts, V.C., D.S.O., O.B.E., M.C. At that moment, however, he was Brigadier commanding the Poona Independent Brigade.

The event was organised by the Adjutant, Captain P. B. I. O. Burge. Major P. H. W. Hicks, M.C., commanded the Battalion, with Captain N. C. S. Young, second in command. The officer carrying the Colour was 2/Lt. R. T. Baldwin. Band Sergeant H. Hughes was Bandmaster, and Lance Sergeant A. Barrett, Acting Drum Major. C.S.M. Huskisson was officiating Regimental Sergeant Major.

That’s information from The Times of India, 9 September, 1937. Maybe it will help you sort out the signature.

From the London Gazette it seems that Colonel Roberts returned to the Warwick’s on 8 November. Here he is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Crowther_Roberts

Hi Alan, thanks for the input. The frame is uninteresting to the point of cheap, I doubt it has been re-used. The label is stuck to brown paper which covers the whole of the back, I can't see any sign of re-use but it is certainly possible.

I think the only thing we get from the label is the Rugby connection, unless someone can discover a date range when W. W. Peberdy (and probably A. Peberdy) had their business at 72 Albert street. I may well be wrong though, I have been proved so many times here on RC. ;D

Thanks Tyrannosaurus, here's the signature - see if you can make it out. I suppose it could be F C Roberts but it could be almost anything else. I think the last word is almost certainly Colonel though.

Jim's post - my highlighting:

Working on the assumption he was around 18 at the time of enlistment I've found this birth:
Harold E Flavell/Dec.1912/6d/1196/Rugby.MMN Gould.

& this marriage:
William Flavell=Ellen Gertrude Gould/Dec.1908/Rugby/6d/1021.
There appears to be just 1 sibling:Lucy Ivy Flavell b.1910.
She married Arthur G Gurney/Jun.1931/Rugby/6d/1711.
Harold married Mabel S Hart/Dec.1926/Rugby/6d/1463.
No children listed for Harold in Warks. but there are 2 girls born 1927 & 29 Northants. MMN Hart.
2 children listed for Ivy in Rugby 1934 & 37.

jim

Thanks Jim - we seem to be making progress.

Please all remember (as Jim has done) that we must not name anyone who still may be living.

I have been directed by a fellow RootsChatter to someone who may know a lot more about the Flavells of Rugby. I have sent him an e-mail and look forward to some assistance.

Meanwhile could someone see if any of the people Jim has mentioned appear in an online tree and, if so, try to make contact. You will probably need to get their names from FreeBMD.
