1925 FA Cup
« on: Monday 27 May 13 21:02 BST (UK) »
I am writing a book about Sheffield United and it's FA Cup history. In 1925 United won the cup, beating Cardiff 1-0 at Wembley. In 5th round the Blades beat Everton by a single goal and I am looking for a newspaper report from the game, preferably from a Sheffield newspaper or the Liverpool Echo, can anyone help me please?

Season 1925-1926 was the first time that a 5th Round was held?

Prior to that the 4th Round Proper was followed by Semi-Finals!

Saturday 21st February 1925 - 3rd Round
Sheffield United 1-0 Everton

The date might help you narrow a search for a newspaper?

I've gone through what I can find online, there are articles on the match results - but nothing I can find that resembles an actual report of the game.

Yes KGerrad, I am extremely happy at beating Wednesday - I always am. I have never used the Newspaper Archive as I believe it is expensive, I do have some online resources in terms of newspapers but I only have The Times for the year 1925 and it features the Final but no previous rounds, sadly. I also have books on my shelf but no reports from previous rounds to hand. Maybe when I get time I shall go to the Sheffield Library and sort out reports from local sources.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Some snippets of information about the 3rd round match v Everton on 21 Feb 1925:

Sheffield United's goal was scored by Tunstall.

Match attendance was 51,745, generating receipts of £3,430.

(Western Morning News, 23 Feb 1925).

A fuller report with an emphasis on the performance of Scottish-born players appears in the Glasgow-based newspaper The Sunday Post, 22 Feb 1925.

"HOW SCOTSMEN PLAYED IN ENGLISH TIES

Everton Out

Sheffield United had Everton at Bramall Lane before 50,000 people.  Everton brought a large crowd, who early were cheering good work by M'Bain and Chedgzoy.

A long kick by a Sheffield defender relieved, sent Partridge going, and Tunstall, running in to meet a centre, fired in a terrific shot which gave Sheffield an early goal.

M'Donald and Raitt put up a good show, while M'Bain played with all his usual skill.

In the second half Chadwick was early prominent with some good shots, but his luck was not in.

Jock M'Donald continued to play well for Everton and Bain had now found his feet.

Play was equal and keen.  Even Neil M'Bain was in great form, playing a fine artistic game.

Everton set up a prolonged attack, all the forwards having shots, and the Sheffield goal had hair's breadth escapes.

The Sheffield backs made no mistakes.

Both Chadwick and M'Bain failed at free kicks, and Everton were beaten by the only goal of the game.

Result: Sheffield United 1; Everton 0."

Thank you,

I know that on the British Pathe website they have some footage, including the goal from this game; http://www.britishpathe.com/video/hard-luck-everyone-aka-hard-luck-everton/query/sheffield+united - I also know that it was the highest attendance recorded at the ground until it was beaten again en route to the 1936 cup final. Tunstall, who scored against Everton also netted the winner in the final against Cardiff.
