Hello,

it's not a dead end-you can get the marriage certificate which will take you back a bit further hopefully.
From Henry's death record, his birth is shown abt 1884.
1911 free index has one in Devonport born in Bristol https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XW9K-MJR
That may be worth following up but the certificate will confirm.

Sandra - there are supposed to be Spanish Jews somewhere along the line down that side of the family - we were trying to unearth them. I know Carroll side definitely RC - grandma was aswell but not sure if rest were.

Thanks Heywood - If he was a sailor, I'm assuming he moved to Plymouth area for that reason - will do some more hunting.

Perhaps Henry went on a long sea trip between the arrivals of Alice and Joan?

There are records of sailings and crew  of ships available somewhere on line. Might be  worth following up.  Not sure how you do that.

Its getting exciting now.

At the top of this page if you put ships crew in the search box some hints come up.
